John deere 55

Did the 55 hydrostatic combines have a diesel or gas and also did they have a varibale speed cylinder or do you still have to change the sprockets?

Jacob, I believe the 55 hydro was first available in 1964, regardless of fuel type. The variable speed cylinder was made available on the Corn Specials introduced in '68. I believe it was an option on this package and not standard. You hardly see a CS without it, though they were available. Mike

Pity the poor parts man....FWIW:
1976 Fel-Pro shows , under 55, 55R Combine, Herc QXD3 and 217 (gas), both 6's...
1994 Clevite shows, for 55 Combine, early and late gas versions, 217 gas, early and late diesel versions, 248 diesel, and the 6303 gas and diesel...
(those may refer to early and late versions of the engines, as different engine bearings are shown)...
Under 55R it shows the same "early and late" 217 gas engines.

Hydraulic drive became available on a very limited basis for 55 and 95 combines in 1964, a couple of years later for the 105. The 55s would have had 217 engines if gasoline, and 248 engines if LP-Gas or diesel. Both the 55 and 95 combines got the 303 engine beginning in the 1967 model year, regardless of fuel type. Variable-speed cylinders became available in 1968, and could be obtained on any type of 55, 95, or 105 combine. The 55 and 95 hydro's used a pump mounted on the engine output shaft, and oil was piped to the motor mounted on the transmission. 105's used a belt-drive system in whch the pump and motor were belt-driven from the engine and piggybacked and mounted on the transmission. Finding a good 55 hydro is going to be a tough proposition, the 1967-69 machines with the 303 engine were by far the best, especially the diesels. As far as the variable-speed cylinder drive is concerned, the units for the 55, 95, and 105 were interchangeable. These units worked very well, but did require some maintenance
