John Deere 60 fluids.

I was reading the manual on my 60 today and had a few questions. What is the modern equivalent on the fluids I need for my tractor?

first off, congrats on reading the manual. good job.

in my 60, i use John deere Hygard oil for the hydraulics, 80w90 in the transmission, 30 wt inth the engine, John deere power steering fulid in the power steering, John deere coolgard in the radiator, and 10 weight in the PTO. I am unsure if Hygard can be used in the PTO or not.

Most or all of the oils that it says to use in the manual, are still around.

Engine: should be good with 10W30 or 15W40
Hydraulics: any UTF is fine. might need lightweight if using in cold climates.
Trans: 80W90 is good. 85W140 is ok too.
Coolant: any automotive coolant/antifreeze works.
Power Steering(if equipped): JD 2cylinder PS fluid ONLY.
PTO clutch: 10W works. lightweight hydro-trans works.
Air cleaner: almost every oil works. I use engine oil or UTF.

Personally, in my A’s and 60 I use;
15w-40 diesel oil in the engines
Any oil in the air filter
80-90 gear oil in the tranny and first reduction cover
Hygard in the powertrol and the live PTO
And regular antifreeze in the radiators

My opinion is if the JD engineers had the modern fluids we have today they would have told us to use them instead of the fluids of the time like non detergent oil.
However, if you tractor has been run all its life with non-detergent oil you should either open up the engine and clean it out real good or at least be careful and change the oil and filter several times when first swapping to high detergent.
My Grandpa and great grandpa saved the old oil they drained from their cars and used it for the oil in my tractors for decades with no issues so it can’t be that important.

When you buy an oil filter be sure it comes with a new gasket, the ones JD sells now don’t anymore. I hear the NAPA filter is superior to the JD one, I haven’t tried it yet.
Be very careful not to tighten the filter nut to tight or bad things will happen.

Ok since the other guys chimned in I will add mine to muddy the waters: JD Power Stearing fluid, Regular Green antifreeze, 30wt in the engine, Regular wt hydraulic fluid in the hydraulics, 80w-90 wt in the trans, Lucus oil in the first reduction gear case because it makes it just a little quieter. 10 wt non detergent oil in the PTO clutches.

I remember it the other way around...

New oil in the tractors, old oil in the truck...

------ dad off when he sent the case of oil for his old truck which he had left on the farm, found out grandpa put it in the tractor, and what was drained from the tractor went in the truck.

LOL!
