john deere 850 year made

I recently purchased an 850 and am in need of finding out the year it was made. So if you can help me I would highly appreciate it. The serial number on the rear tag from what I can see is 0850S003522 and another number after that which seems to be a 0 or a C. So I'm assuming the serial number is CH0850S0035220. The previous owner claims that it a 1985 but is not sure. Thanks

Here's a link to the TractorData page for your 850. Down towards the bottom is the serial numbers for the different years. The
number you list doesn't quite match up to what you were told - 35220 is too large a number and 3522 would mean a 1978 model.

I also found stamped on the casing below the seat on left side of tractor the numbers 003522. or Perhaps the engine numbers can help. Stamped on the left side of the block towards the front are the numbers 3T80J-82578.

I would agree with Brendon-KS. Your six digit serial number is 003522, making it a 1978 built machine. Up to serial number 014443 there are letters after the 6 digits to designate the manufacturer. Letters are most likely what you are seeing after the 003522. So your serial number is read as 0850S003522CH. Starting with serial number 014444 (CH0850S014444) the letters were at the beginning of the ID string. CH would means Yanmar. Info is from JD parts catalog PC1876.
