Im looking to buy a 1948 john deere A pulling tractor. The bore+ stroke is 6.125x7.50 short light weight pistons reground cam (more lift).comp is 10-1, 18.4-34 tires .the tractor runs real good.we don't pull mph, first gear only. so how heavy could I pull and have enough power...Thank you ,Jim

You should have anywhere from 65-75 HP, depending on the induction setup (head/manifold/carb). Assuming a 20" hitch and an average track, sled with a 4" chain, you should be ok in the 6500# class. A power track will kill it at that weight if you"re at the lower end of the HP range. Mike

does it have 2 stick tranny or is it a 6spd? if its a 6 spd with low 1st gear you will be fine right thru 10000lbs..your 18.4x34s should be about same height as 14.9x38s..if you have 2 stick tranny you may want to go to 15.5x38s

We all make mistakes. The A seems to be the model Deere didn't know what direction to go. Block bolt patterns/ frame changes/gear changes/ gov changes/ reduction changes. It's a confusing model from start to finish.

Couldn't have said it better. I had a '48 pressed frame, gasoline, 2 shift lever myself. (Should of never sold it. ) Whether it's true or not but I once heard that the model A in particular, undertook the most changes of any model JD tractor ever built.

JC321. I have a 1950 JD A pulling tractor for sale. It is bored 6.125 and stroked 8.750. It has 720 diesel pistons, ultra-dine cam, and crank by Murfield. The head was modified by Dicks welding. It has 16.9 top cut tires and 12 inch wheels on the front. My number is 614 561-9454 if interested. Also has front middle and rear weight brackets and adjustable drawbar with wheelie bars and weights.
