I have a 49 deere b thats givin me issuse. Its acting like its loading up but I have/had the carb rebuilt like 4 times now.we had an external coil put on because the one in the mag went bad. It runs but then it will start to die but if you mess with the choke and the throttle it will start to clear up but then it will stat acting up again. Then it dies. But then you can start it back up then the same thing happens again. I really need to fix this for my 87 yr old grandpa who loves this tractor. Please help me with this for him.

Substitute a known good magneto and try it. Some times the choke can mask ignition problems. Just a thought. Might also have sticking valves if it's been setting a while. If so, remove the valve cover and run it while flushing the valve stems with Berryman's B-12 solvent. It has freed them up for me every time, get it at Wal-Mart. Good luck,
Paul

Hello Paul

Ti sound to mr like it may need new condenser in magneto . Ihave a 39 B and it would do that to or your carburetor float may need some ajd

That "external coil" thing you mentioend, was it a Wico XB distributor that got converted or was it a Wico X Mag that you converted to a battery ignition???

You at 6 or 12 volts????????? The Wico XB had its own internal ballast resistor and they were designed for 6 volt use, if it got converetd Im curious as to how it was wired.

If you used a Wico X Mag its internal condensor may not be best value for whatever coil you used which casues points problems.

On the carb, you need to turn gas on and open its lower bowl drain/cock and insure gas flows pencil lead size at least a couple minutes.

There's lots of things that can cause this so you need to start "eliminating".

If you think it's an issue with your spark - hold the plug wire off a plug while you crank the engine and look for a blue spark. Test both this way.

If you open the pet cock at the bottom of the carb you should get a steady stream of gas. Test for 20-30 seconds to determine if your float is okay.

Does the tractor run fine at full throttle and not at idle speeds?

Check your throttle/gov. linkages and make sure they're correct.

I knew a guy that had 4 different people rebuild and look at a carb and everyone missed a block passage in a carb.

If you haven't bought the JD repair manual for the tractor it's well worth the money since the one for the B covers how the gov. works. Don't buy an IT manual as they aren't worth the money.

Keep plugging away and you'll get it.

It has been converted to 8 volts. it was 6 have steady flow out of carb. runs ok sometimes at both high snd idle but then not so well at either
