John Deere B powertrol question

Hey guys I have a 51 B with powertrol that I run a New Idea 500 trip loader with. I thought I would like to use this tractor this spring to rake hay with, I have a ten wheel v rake with a kicker wheel, it has two way cylinders on it to raise and lower the rake arms. When I tried to test it out with the B it wont work? Can the powertrol operate this rake or am I doing something wrong, the rake always works fine with my JD 2440. Any suggestions, Thanks

There is a screw on the powertrol that you need to screw in or out to go from singe acting to double acting cylinders. Check your operators manuel.

I have a local fellow who has one of those rakes by the sound of it. He tried it on a 50 and 60 and it didn't work right. I have to go check the pressures on them and check some other things out too.
I will post an update when/if I find anything out.

It may be that the rake's pressure requirements for its cylinder bores won't work on the B. The B normal operating pressure is like 750 or so PSI and the load on a small bore cylinder may be too much for that low a pressure. That is especially true if the cylinders are pulling to lift the load. The bigger the cylinder ram the worse the problem.

A 2" diameter cylinder with a 7/8" ram operating at 750 PSI can push about 2350 LBS. Can only pull about 1900 pounds or so. At 2400 PSI that same cylinder can push about 7540 pounds and pull like 6100 lbs. The 2440 has three times the B's operating pressure on it's worst days!

Larger diameter cylinders would likely fix the problem.

Hope that helps.

ET,
There's nothing on the Powr-Trol that can be adjusted to let you use a double acting cylinder with power in both directions.

I think you meant the metering screw which controls slow raise speed and is also used to shift from rockshaft to remote cylinder operation.

Yes I had the pto engaged, the powertrol has the plugs in it to operate the loader on the tractor which operates fine, but I think it only has pressure up and no down pressure, maybe this is why the rake wont work, I didnt know if powertrol could supply pressure two ways? Any suggestions that could make this work would be great, it would be nice to have a tractor raking and baling at the same time. Thanks

Pete,

There are two screws on the powertrol, one to set the speed of the return of the rockshaft (under gravity load) the other is used to switch from rockshaft operation to remote cylinder operation after removing the dummy plugs and putting in the remote plugs.

It will operate a double acting cylinder when you do this.

Did you turn the screw that changes the powertrol from rockshaft operation to remote cylinder operation?

Kurt

Kurt,

I don't think you read my post closely enough.

I know what both screws are used for. I described exactly what the metering screw is used for. I didn't mention the throttle valve screw because it didn't have any bearing on the comment ET made which is what I was responding to.

When I mentioned remote cylinder operation I said there is nothing on the Powr-Trol that will give you power in "both directions" on a double acting cylinder. Do you disagree with that?

Pete
