John Deere B Serial Number Question

Hello all you JD experts, I bought what I believe is a 1940 styled JD B today and on the serial number tag is a single number "8". What does that mean? I don"t see any evidence of any other numbers ever being there and worn off. I have no idea but its in great shape and has brand new rubber.

Thanks,

JF

Jordan, styled "B" tractors produced during the 1940 production year will carry a serial number within the range of from 81000 through 95999. Are you certain you are seeing the actual SERIAL TAG? Serial tags are a wee bit smaller than an ordinary business card, and attached to the tractor by means of two "rivet-like-looking" drive screws, one at each end. These tags were made from brass in the very early going (mid-30's), then aluminum until WW2 demand for aluminum forced a change to steel during some of the 40's. The steel tags are the ones most difficult to read! Be very careful not to use heavy abrasives on the tag, but gently clean it up to see if more data shows up. (PatB).

Yes, I agree. That's why I was asking. I will post a picture after I get it home. I have the first serial number of an Oliver production run and it certainly not simply number "1"....I just can't find any info on this and it's seems a bit odd.

Pat,

Yes, it is the serial tag. It is as you described it and it is steel. It says "Serial No:" and then a single "8".... I'll see if I can get a decent picture and post it.

Thanks,

JF

ordan, I wonder if someone replaced the tag with a blank one with the intent of adding the/a number later, and the "8" you see is really a "B"? Just a thought.
