John Deere D Block

Hello all, I have a block that came off my 1944 Model D. The problem I have is it has a ever so slight bulge in one of the cylinder walls. Far as I know this motor has never been bored out to a larger size. Is this something a machinist could fix or is this block garbage? To give you an idea how the bulge was it caused the piston to be stuck but my 84 year old grandfather was able to drive it out with a block of wood and hammer. Thanks for listening. Josh

MMMMMMM.... Sounds like it may have frozen at some point. Only a machine shop could answer the questions you are asking. They need a bore gauge and a few calculations. The D blocks have lots of extra meat in the cylinders. They usually take a large amount of boring pretty well. If I'm not mistaken someone makes 7" bore pistons for the D.

I find it hard to believe that freezing could cause a bulge in a cyl without breaking the outside water jacket. Was the tractor not running for awhile & maybe got rust in it? Need more information.

if there is water in the cvl when is freezes it will swell the boer i had a G Block that did it it broke the cyl only

Yes the tractor was parked for awhile, It's a hand start and the previous owner went up to it tried to turn it over it wouldn't so he sold it at auction where we bought it, right now the block is off the tractor and we ran a hone in both bores to get a better look so there is no longer any rust, there wasn't much before we started. The bulge is really hard to see but if you look just right you can see it. The bulge is on the outside on the Crankshaft side of the petcock or as it appears the mind can be a funny thing.
We don't know if it froze with water in the coolant area or not, as when we bought it we planed on a rebuild anyways because of the stuck condition but weren't expecting a decent looking bore with good pistions so we were a bit suprised at the fact of the bulge. First time either of us saw something like that and He restored a little over 40 JD's. The last John Deere Machinist just passed away and its quite a bit of a drive to the other we plan on using so it would be nice to know if its worth draging the block up there before we do. Thanks for the help guys I do alot of reading on these forums and am in awe of the knowledge here I knew even If I didn't get a answer I was looking for I would get some helpful hints.
