john deere D timing

Hi got a john deere d 1928 trying to get it to run today tried to start it got it to fire and even start off the flywheel but not very good it ran nice enough but it is a pain to start swung all day and got a bad arm. the carb is in good shape put new gaskets float valve etc etc i removed and cleaned the splitdorf mag and got a spark like a welder not sure about the timing i set the points / breaker to open on the retard spark lh mark as the book says with the advance retard fully retarded but find the impulse goes off about 4 inches retarded of here could this be the problem if i set the impulse to go off at lh spark retard i can get it to fire but wont clear through and run could the impulse be timed wrong in the mag i may also be over choking the tractor and possibly flooding but ive been on it all day you would think i would have got lucky has very good compression any help will be greatly appreciated ill have muscles like an ox if it keeps this up

Did you turn the mag by hand until it snapped and then mount it. You need to hold the lug still in the exact position it snapped.

I haven't had to time one of those earlier Ds, but you want that spark AT "LH RETARD" when you're cranking, not before or after, or you'll have lots of fun starting the tractor, and it probably won't run right either.

for what its worth,i have a 35 D that starts real easy as long as it has lots of gas,i used to think i was flooding it but not so.it needs to be blowing gas out the petcocks before it will start.i leave her choked till it fires and then the next pull and it usaly runs.
