John Deere G and GM difference.

Would some one explain the difference in a John Deere G and GM. When did they start calling the GM and for what reason.

The GM Model started at Serial Number 13000, During the war in order for Deere to initiate a higher price for their new styled G, they had to call it a different model so they called it a GM for G Modernized. The GM has the same style steel pan seat as unstyled models, you could get them either hand or electric start, on electric start models the battery box is in front of the valve cover. GM Tractors on the John Deere words across the back axles like the unstyled/early styled models, The GM Has a roller style drawbar similar but not the same as the unstyled g, Most GMs had a one piece cast rear wheel when equipped with rubber tires, as they didn't have a bolt in hub like a later styled G. You could order a GM on full steel from the factory, if that was the case it would only be a 4 speed model, not a 6 speed. Handstart GMs only had 2 gauges in the dash, one for the water and one for the oil. Electric start models had a 3 hole dash for the extra amp gauge. GMs on Rubber also had a Non Reversible 4 Slot 16" front wheel, later styled Gs had a Reversible front wheel with No Slots in it. No GMS had wide fronts or single fronts, all had fixed pedistals and the split pedestal wasn't an option for the G but could be installed on one later in life but it wouldn't be original. The model GM said GM on the serial number tag rather than model G, Although some of the very first styled Gs made in 1947 still had pan seats and had G on the serial number instead of gm very few of those Gs were built. To add to above. There was a price freeze during the war. Just styling the G, Deere could not raise the price thus the model change.
