is a 1947 john deere GM worth more as a flat back, or with pto and hyd? how many flat backs came out back then alot? have chance to buy a flat back for $1800 stuck thanks bigtom72

Well if it has a flat back all you can do is pull a wagon,if it has a lift you can use differant tools, now you tell me. Id prefur a tractor I could use.

I bought a 1946 GM last year. You sure its a GM? Thought they had moved back to the G in 1947. My GM has a PTO and is a flat back. But it has an aftermarket live hydraulic pump with 2 outlets which from a usability standpoint, is better then what JD offered at the time.

Out of all the G's I've ever seen here in the states, I've only seen a few flatbacks, powr-trol w/PTO much more common.
The last GM was s/n 22112, built 3/10/47, shipped to Minneapolis.
The first early styled G (round pan seat) was s/n 23000, built 3/07/47 exported, last 25671 built 7/29/47 to Raleigh, NC.
First late styled G (battery box seat) was s/n 26000. built 7/30/47, shipped to Raleigh, NC.
Many collectors regard the early styled G's 23000-25671, as more rare. If it was a factory flatback, that would be a bonus. I have also seen a flatback with the battery box pads for the late styled G.

serial # is 19115 must be a 1946 instead and it does have pto so it's not a true flat back right? a true flat back has neither pto or hyd. right? bigtom72

I have a true flatback for a JD B that has the bearing for the PTO, and I'm thinking if there isn't a PTO shaft that a welch plug is installed instead of the outer seal, so the casting itself would be the same.
I've always thought flatback meant no power lift and no rockshaft.

no true, Ive got an 37 A with flat back and has pto., And I had a 720 with flat back cover no pto, but had rock shaft. So it can go either way depends what tractor,

I was under the understanding that flat back refered to no rockshaft or highdrolics. We have a 38A that is a flat back and it has the pto.I would think if you can buy a GM or a G for 1800 buck I would do it.getting the engine unstuck will be a challange. But one that can be done.If you restore the GM you should be able to resell it for alot more than 1800. I would jump all over it for 1800. And as far as useful? Well most of the older John Deeres are more of a big mans toy than something you would use daily to farm with.So buy it and fix it up.

a GM has "GM" on the tag where a regular styled "G" just has "G" before the serial #...BTW running styled "G's" won't bring over $1000 or $1200 at the most ...now a US "G" thats another ball game..I got [1] GM & [2] G's that I'd like to trade for [1] US "G" in any condition!!
