John Deere H wiring question

Restoring a '46 H with electric start and lights. I bought new wiring harness from Brillman Co. MY question on one wire, the paper with the wires says "#2f = light switch resistor to generator F" The tractor did not have a light switch resistor before, so what does it do, is it completely necessary, thats fine if it is I will get one, and also if needed where does the other end of the light switch resistor hook to? I'm about as sharp as a marble when it comes to electrical stuff. Thanks

The resistor should be part of the light switch--or at least it is on mine. I just replaced switch with a new one and it has resistor on it as did my old original .

Per below the light switch is to be a 3 position switch with a resistor. all the way in is lights off low charge, second notch lights off high charge third all the way out is lights on and high charge.

I found out the hard way that on a low priced switch there was hardly and difference in charge rate between lo and hi charge. The higher priced switch worked better.

The resistor mentioned is not a resistor for the lights. It just happens to be on the light switch and that's why it is referred to as the light siwtch resistor.

As other's say the switch controls the charge rate of the generator. It does this by passing the generator's field current through the resistor when the switch is pushed all the way in. This is the Generator's low output mode. When the switch is pulled out a little (first notch out) the resistor is bypassed solidly grounding the Generator's Field terminal. This is the high output mode. When the switch is all the way out it keeps the resistor bypassed for high generator output and turns on the lights.

If it has the three position light switch and the cutout relay style charging system, the switch must be grounded for the generator to work!

Maybe that helps?
