john deere help

hey guys, i have a 1950 jd b. im haing trouble with it ideling. i cleand the idle and load ports and hols what ever you want to call them, i ws it to idle steady like a pop pop pop pop pop, right ow it goes pop pop csat coast pop pop coast coast, what do i need to do to get it to idle smooth. cuz when its not under load its a hard ride. if anyone could help me that would be great. thaks agian. jonathan s in nepa.

the engine doesnt fire every 360 degrees. it fires on 540 and 180. so its not gonna be like u want it at idle depending on how slow u idle it.

It's going to sound like a "putt-putt (pause), putt-putt (pause)" This is normal because of the below gentleman's reasoning.

This engine does not idle smoothly because of the firing situation mentioned above. Also the right cylinder will tend to be dealing with a richer mixture that will foul the plug slightly at idle unless you rev it up occasionally to burn it clean.

I don"t know whether you know JD"s that well, a JD is a 2cyl anot a 1,3or 4 so it idels differently. Like mattd said it only fires at 180 and 540 degrees because of it being a 2cyl.
if you are more expirienced with tractors than me and I sound like a condesending jerk, I am not.

Don"t be too hard on him guys, if the governor isn"t doing a smooth job, JD"s will idle unevenly too. Another question is how slow an idle is it running at? Too slow, can lead to galloping too.

We have four A B G John Deeres, and every one of them idles perfectly and never miss a beat.
Some Suggestions:
1. Richen up your idle mixture.
2. Check the governor rod length to carburetor.
(Read the archives to get this exact spec.)
4. Adjust the throttle stop screw on top of the carburetors throttle control. Tighten the screw until it rests against the vertical spring. You will have to experiment with this a little.

Any JD two cylinder gas tractor I've ever heard hunts a bit at low idle. The diesels won't do that, they will idle at a smooth rythmic beat.

Of course the 620 idles smooth. The 620 has an idividual carb per cylinder on a 180/540 engine.
The A shares a single barrel carb with a 180/540 engine.
The single barrel two cylinder Deere's snort for the same reason a Harley snorts.
Installing a new distributer bushing, ensuring operation of the advance weights and a Pertronix ignition will stabilize the timing.

it shouldnt coast you said you can take the needle out and it does nothing i had that prob someone took a grinder to it so it was a little short you can still buy them from deere to adjust gov with tractor off unhook linkage from carb with lever all the way back and carb completely shuut adjust rod so its half a hole too short to drop in the carb

How does a 70 lp dist. work? 180/540?? Would my g on lp run better with a 70 lp dist? I put petronax electronic on the g and no change.
