John Deere M making oil

Would anyone have an idea as to how I'm getting gasoline in the crankcase of my 1949 JD M? Thanks, RHV

Needle must be not seating well in the carburetor. Possibility that float has a hole in it.

Are you sure its gas in the oil? A common problem is hydrollic oil from the lift getting in the crankcase. The pump at the front of the engine has seals that can leak. The leak goes into the motor oil. A common problem.

Are you sure it's gas and not from the Touch-O-Matic pump? The pump connects to the front of the motor and there is a seal the keeps the TOM oil out of the engine/crankcase. The seal went bad on my MT and it started making oil. It seems to be a pretty common occurrence on these M series tractors. My MT just about filled the crankcase from the TOM pump in a few weeks of sitting. When I took it apart to fix the seal it was the original from 1950 and it was shot. If the oil does smell like gas then ditto to what TX Jim said... but I am going to go with the pump seal is bad because the exhaust/intake ports on the manifold are a few inches higher than where the carb bolts up on the manifold. If it were gas then it would have to use gravity to build up to that high of a level to spill into the motor through those ports. I suppose with a full tank of fuel and the fuel shut off left open it could happen.

Yes it could be hyd oil in crankcase.

The engine oil definitely smells like gasoline. I'll check the carb first and if it's ok I'll check out the oil seal. Thanks everyone for your input. RHV
