john deere missing serial number

I bought a 1951 "B" john deere and discovered to my horror after getting it home that the serial number had been scratched off the plate. How can I get a serial number? dismantled tractor? any suggestions.

Before you get too excited, ask yourself why you care if it has a serial tag on it. The one you get won't be the original anyways.

If the number is totally scratched out about the only way to read the number is from the backside of the tag. The aluminum tags are by far the easiest to read on the backside.
If you must have a new tag, they do sell them on the internet, e-bay. Some I have seen are pretty accurate to the original.
As others have said though, there is only one tag that is original to the tractor, the one that's on it. Everyone has a different view, but I am personally opposed to using a tag from another tractor, even scrap. Then there are two tractors or tags with unknown or incorrect history.
