john deere model 50 noise

I have a 1956 model 50 that my father and i bought as a father son project. We both like old tractors and thought i would be fun. We bought it from a guy and it had been sitting for a year or so. The engine was stuck but came loose easy enough...
its all back together and running great except there is a noise in the transmission when moving. nothing in the engine. It sounds like a bearing growl and only happens when moving in any gear and when it is under a load like going up a hill or pulling something.
Someone told my father that it was the bearing in the clutch/pulley since it does it in every gear. So we took that apart and the bearing was wore but not noisey so we replaced that, strike one.
someone then told my father that it could be a bearing under the gear reduction cover so we tore that aprt and found the 2 bearing in the pto drive gear were shot and very noisey, so we replaced them and strike two..
I was never good at baseball so i thought i would look for more help before i strike out..
I am not very knowledgeable on the old jd"s so i am looking for help. i want to figure it out so i can sell it so we can start another project even though i am not so sure after this one
I have way more in it than it is worth i am sure but i don"t want to sell it with something wrong with it either.
It did have milky oil in the transmission.
Please help me with any ideas, my email address is [email protected] thanks

You'll need to dig deeper in the transmission and find the bearing that is causing the noise. Plus, you'll have to tighten up tolerances in all the bearings by shimming, etc, as per the IT manual.

Even then, you'll never get rid of the noise entirely, since 60% of the noise is in the worn gears. Pitted gears will cause a groan; usually, a bearing makes whining sounds.

you may need to remove the axles and check the bearings on them. its not as bad as it sounds if you go by the jd shop manual. only thing is don't remove the seat and you don't have to take the hubs off the axles, just remove the tires and rims. you'll have to cut the wiring going to the lights and remove the battery lead when removing the power trol housing. when you go back with it put the wiring in place as you slide the power trol back in place. then use a connector that just plugs in to splice the light wiring back together. glad to see you and dad doing somethng together.

Axle bearings turn way to slow to whine. They will be a pop or a grind.

I say one thing at a time unless he is interested in a restoration. In that case remove everything to work on the transmission. It will make it much easier.

I agree with Rob,I have a 60 that i went through the transmission and found several things wrong but after a couple hundred bucks, its still noisy...its just straight cut worn gears.

I have a 50 that made a growling noise in the transmission. Discovered that it was a bad bearing on the bottom shaft in the transmission. Had to completely gut the transmission to repair it. If your noise is really bad, you might look there.

my thought on the axle bearings was brought on by the fact that he said it whinned in when moving and i think he said all gears. i don't know if some gears don't turn in the tranny if they are engaged by the gear shift or not. i know i had a lot of whine in my b and it turned out to be more in the clutch.
