John Deere Mowers at BigBox Stores

Since we are on the subject of BigBox stores.. I heard that MTD produces all of the John Deere mowers under contract from Mother Deere for the BigBox stores, BUT.... John Deere dealers WON'T touch them..

All the John Deere branded mowers are built by John Deere. They may use some of the same parts as an MTD mower, though. The rumor about John Deere mowers and MTD started because John Deere bought a former MTD plant to build their big box and lower end mowers. A couple of the big box stores only sell JD mowers that are set up by a JD dealer's shop. Bottom line, if you are a paying customer, a JD dealer will work on your mower.

From what I have seen in this day and age any dealer will work on any brand if you pay your bill.

You heard wrong. Buy one & the dealer that services your big box store mowers will be contacting you within a week or two. Deere covered their bases & the dealers have no choice if they want to keep their dealership.

I would like to add. I bought one from a dealer and it was made in USA Seems like every piece/PART had a tag MADE IN USA. So guess we cannot complain to much (maybe buy an LS made in Korea??)

Neighbor of mine bought a John Deere mower, AT the jd dealer (atlantic tractor). Had the receipt with him, when he went to buy a part, and the parts guy swore up and down, that there was no such number, ever sold by that dealership. Made him look more'n a little foolish, when he plopped that receipt down on the counter! Just another reason why I have no dealings with mother deere, or any of her chilluns!

I bought one from Lowes about 7 - 8 years ago and they said it was made in USA. I had to replace the electric clutch switch, the drive belt and 2 mower deck belt. Mother Deere called me a week after the pruchase and said they were going to set up a date to come service the mower. Bought it in May and the service date was Dec 3rd that same year. I called them Dec 15 and they said that I bought it a day after the promotion so they weren"t going to honor it. I gave them my two cents worth and wrote Deere a letter. they sent me 2 hats.

If worried about dealer service why not by from a deere dealer. My 212 is 36 years old-had to re-ring engine once and rebuild rear end once (my fault-not deeres).

Deere dealer will work on them but if you take it to him he will service his custmers before his does big box work. And Deere dealers are not the only ones that do that.

Yup, and the JD dealers are none too happy about it. The JD dealers are the ones who also set them up for the box stores too. The tractors sold at the HD here even have the JD dealer sticker on them for service or parts.

funny thing is way to much thinking of what to buy because of color and cheaper price. price always dictates the quality of the total product,class of engine no matter what brand,tranny etc. you can switch anything out ther into any other mower out there and you would not no difference othe than the color yu are sitting on in most cases. as for as the mower you got from big box store no big deal service them here all time. you spend less at purchase time and give me more later in parts and repair because customers think these are commmercial units and try to use them that way,which very seldom pays in the year or two down the road. You simple get what you pay for. you want service then buy from a good reputable service dealer you know and be done with it.

I've been waiting for this topic and all I can say to a prospective JD purchaser from Home Depot is to stay as far away from them as possible.Paid $2600 and it has been the least reliable most expensive to repair waste of money I have ever seen. Will not hold a charge breaks belts and hard for an owner to work on. Stay away from them and even the dealers will tell you how bad they are. Ironically i bought a Husquarvna from a dealer the next year and it has been flawless and are reputed to have a similar geneology. Stay away from JD big box products.

I work for a Husqvarna dealer. We service several Deere mowers in a year's time. While there are some distinct similarities between the Deere and the Husqvarna, like the transmission drive, the steering, the dash tower,etc. NONE of the frame parts interchange. But somebody was looking at someone else's mower when the last one was designed.

Husqvarna riders are all SAE fastners, except for transmission and engine. The Deere is all metric.

I was told by a John Deere dealer that the 100 series is built by John Deere and they are made to compete with the MTD market . Cub cadet is owned by MTD.

My Father-in-law bought a Sabre lawn tractor from the John Deere dealer in 1999 or 2000...and I "inherited" it. Even though it says "by John Deere" on the tractor, the dealer sneers at me every time I come in for parts.

Since this one was bought from the dealership, I can't imagine HOW they could look down on the ones from the "big box stores" that actually are John Deere branded any more than they do this one they actually sold; I don't think it's humanly possible. [And that's another reason why my next one WON'T be bought at the local Deere dealership.]

Wrong. Deere makes them in Greeneville, TN.
