Our FFA Chapter was donated a no. 55 combine that looks to be complete, needs new belts etc. The serial no. is 40545 with a Herculese engine no. 2894782 and axle no. 40481.
What year was this made?
What problem areas do we need to examine as we put this into running order?
Where do we find parts for this? We hope to have this running by early spring so we know if we should plant some grain. Thanks for the info.

It's a 1956 round back. 55 was made from 1954 to 1969 but several changes along the way. Amazingly many parts will still be available from JD dealer and collector parts vendors. I've found Jay Dee Enterprises and bearing houses have a lot of belts for combines dealers will tell you can't get anymore. Go to jdparts.com then click on the parts catalog section and download a parts book for it don't have to buy one. Ask around might find a operators manual if don't have that yet or find one on ebay or other sources. Tell us where you are at and check with local antique tractor clubs there who tinkers with old combines. You might be amazed with the help you will get. Getting the engine running first and seeing if it moves to get it mobile. Seeing what parts are needed and making a list checking them off as you go.

Actually, the 55 was introduced in the late 40's. I have some NOS parts for model 55 combines, to include a feeder house chain. When you get into the restoration, keep me in mind as I will sell parts very, very reasonable. Glad to see your FFA chapter taking on a task like this. Keep us informed.

Mid 40s during WWII for experimentals but 47 for production. That stupid blue book guide only lists serials numbers for the 55 from 1954-69. Who has serial numbers from before that? Take lots of pictures and post some on here for us later.
