John Deere R value

Hi,
I posted about a finding a R a couple of days ago and got a great response! thank you guys for the amazing response.

I found a R at place that Duane(pa) suggested. The big motor has been boored out and rebuilt. the pony was looked over and had small repairs done to it. The sheet metel is verry strait and the rubber is fair.

He is asking $7500 for it. Can i have your guys input on this? Tell me what you think. Thanks,

Sounds pretty high for a R. It takes a pretty nice R to get 5000 in wisconsin. If you are willing to spend that amt of money I would consider the 820 or 830.

I agree with donwisc. It does seem a little steep for an R. You could get a little more harder to get tractor i.e. 80, 820 for that price.

I would like to eventually own an R as well. I would like to stick with letter series for my small collection, although a 440 I loader / back hoe has crept in somehow. buickanddeere noted reliability problems with the R crank and PTO drive. Did the R have a three main crank? Was this the reliability solution on later models? There are a lot of Rs still out there. Was there a crank upgrade from Deere?

an R should not cost more than 5500, I have seen running R's (both motors) for under 4000. 820's and 30's can be found for 5000 - 8000. Any higher than that look at 80's. Take your time and look unless you need it today.

The Rs have a two main crank. There were a lot of Rs used around here in wheat country. I presently own one and I pull the $hit out of it. Yes, they have a two main crank, but I have never heard of one breaking, but apparently someone has as there is constant criticism about the weak crank. They are only 45 HP and the HP was greatly increased on the 80, 820, 830, so I think that is why Deere went to the three main crank. Just my humble opinion.

Thanks for the info and confidence in the R. When I find one I am going to assume that if the crank made it for sixty years it will hold up for my part time haymaking operation.
