john deere R

(quoted from post at 10:48:02 12/25/13) Just got home a new (to me) JD R. No manual yet. Ordered one from E-bay. How do shut off the diesel?
ush in the button and pull the throttle back. I went through the same thing with an R I bought. It had sat in a shed in North Dakota for maybe 20? years, fifteen years without running. We pulled it out with me on the R and while we were in motion I pushed in the clutch to see if the engine was free. Not only was it free but it popped right off. I was sitting there startled but jubilant, then I realized there wasn't any water in the rad so I'd better shut it down but I didn't know how so I put it in high gear and killed it. Jim

The button might not be froze up, on a 70 I owned you couldn't pull the button out if the throttle was all the way back, had to leave the throttle open just enough so it wasnt against the stop, then the button worked easy...

Uncle Gene always uses the compression release on his R. The idea is to not have the fly-wheel bouncing back and forth on the crank splines. Have fun with your new R. They are a very cool machine. Vern H

Using the decompresser causes some washdown of the cylinder walls with raw fuel and some crankcase oil dilution.
Loose flywheels on the R through 840 is not the concern that the 70 through 730 diesels had. The only advantage is less concentrated wear on area of the flywheel ring gear.

Well if it is bouncing back & forth while cranking, you have a real problem as there is way more torque on it when it is firing.

The stop button is the 'speed control lever stop button'. You push it in and pull the throttle back. Jim
