John Deere starter

I have a 70 gas, rebuilt with a bit of compression. If the stock 12V starter has trouble with it can you run 24V through one of these starters?

If you don't mind me asking how much cylinder pressure do you have? I am planning on doing the same thing to my 70 and had the same concerns, let me know if you come up with a fix.

My G has ALOT of compression, and a rebuilt starter with two optima batteries and a good ground and it will spin the fool out of it, with the compression releases closed. The key to making it work is the good ground, i run a ground straight from the battery to one of the starter mounting bolts. That made more difference than the two batteries. To answer your question about the 24v, it will work as long as you dont spin it to long at the time, but you shouldnt need to do that.

had a friend with the same trouble, put two batteries on it and broke the nose cone on the starter. he now has two marks on his mag, a start timing position and a farther advanced run position. starter couldnt fight the fire in the cylinder on the advanced timing. just a thought. also, is your starter good, a draging starter will act like a low battery. may want to check your brushes and bushings.

Hollywood has the answer.

Can I guess that your G has a top mount starter? Not impossible to do, but to run a ground down along side the pos through the flywheel cover to the bottom looks like a real PITA. Not as good as a direct cable, but how about a good clean bolt (1/2" I think) for the battery box mount? Everything from the rear end to the starter is bolted together real good with multiple bolts. I hope it works.

Yes the G is a top mount starter. The reason the extra ground does so much good, is because you can have the battery grounded good to the battery box, which is sitting on two painted surfaces, with bolts that have some rust, then all the back end, tranny, and so on is bolted together with gaskets and silicone, and oily rusty bolts, then the starter is bolted to the bracket with paint in between, and rusty bolts. The bottom line is you lose alot of ground through all of that. And without a good ground however many amps your battery(s) have is cut down alot. I could see where running an extra ground on a 70 could be a big PITA, but we are tractor pullers, be creative.

I dont want to sound like a know it all, but me and my father have been down this road before, hope some of this information helps.

Mark Shellum put one on a 70 for another guy, you'd have to talk to him for the whole story, I know there was some machine work involved but it's been on there for about a year
