john deere unstyled B

35b with double brass tag
what does this mean and are they rare
also it said that it had the original mag
that was so rare is this true
thanks

If I had a dollar for every time someone said they have a "RARE" B John Deere just because it had a brass tag or a four bolt front pedestal I would be rich.

Don't remember when JD changed from brass tags to alum or whatever metal, or when they changed from 4 bolt to 8 bolt. Am thinking 37 or 38. They built thousands of them in 35/36, so they certainly weren't "rare" when new. But to find a tractor over 75 years old in running condition could stretch the meaning of "rare".

The " double brass tag " thing could be referring to the PL tag as it is also brass on early ones . Another possibility is the brass tag on the air cleaner cup being called the second brass tag . This would be wrong though as the proper cup on early B"s is white metal - not brass like all later ones .The last 35"s had aluminum tags . Bought # B12011 and used to own # B11981 and both have aluminum tags . FWIW A"s are the other way - early 36"s have brass tags . On the 4 bolt thing B"s from the first B1000 through B3042 are 4 bolt"s . Not really that common compared to the 56,000+ that came with the 8 bolt front end .

Hey, my 1938 Long Frame B has a brass tag, at least on the air cleaner bowl, that counts right lol

Be very careful about brass tags on JD's. There's one for sale on ebay now. No telling where that tag could show up next. Some people are no overly honest about serial tags.

Here's a few pics of early B trivia . The non-brass air cleaner tag is missing sometimes on early B's as many think the brass tag is the older and change them out . Not in this case on the older thing . The brass PL tags are not unique to 4-bolts . They run past that by quite a ways . Early B's are a study in themselves . How many knew the early 4-bolts have a thin frame and the later ones have a thick frame ? Just like the earliest A's having thin frames . I have examples of both .
