John Deere unstyled L ??

I bought a John Deere From a lady and she says it is a L. But It Doesnt have the hood that goes down toward the back of the tractor. The hood that is on it is square. The serial number is 621624. Can anyone tell me what year it is. How many were made. Thanks in advance.

It's a 1938 unstyled Model "L". It is believed that 1502 were built. Nice find.

Acording to my buyers guide you L was built in 1938. The beginning serial number for the unstyled L is 621079 in 1937. The ending number is 622580 in 1938. There were 1502 built. Acording to the star rating system, the unstyled L is a 5 star tractor which means it is a very desirable tractor for collecting. Well worth restoring. The engine is a 3x4 and they were built at the John Deere wagon works in Moline, Il..............RW

Hey dirtfarmer, got a couple questions. I have a picture of an unstyled model L. It was owned by Harold Dobbratz when this picture was taken. It has a square hood and the caption under the picture ssys it is a 1937 serial number 621303. Does your tractor have a Hercules engine or the Deere built vertical two cylinder? Does it have a JD logo below the radiator? I'm thinking your tractor is an early 1938. The cubic inch of the engine is 57 and the cost was $450.00 in 1940 fob Moline. Your tractor could have been built before the change in the hood design was made. RW

That could be very valuable depending on how many of the original parts are still intact. Definitly do some research.
A fellow that is on here I think Deeredale ? has a website that may help you. I'll try to remember/find it and post back. Or maybe he will happen along.

You've got quite the find there!! It's a 1938. If it's all there it's worth between $2500 and $8000 of course depending on it's condition. It has a Hercules NXA engine. John Deere didn't make their own engine for the L series till the early 40's When you get a chance post some pictures!! Congrats!!! JimO
