Dads 4430 is getting hard to start , turns over and over quite a few cranks before starting , when it does start its rough for 5 seconds? or more, would his fuel injection pump be the cause,this just happens on first start of day, shut it off go back in 1 hour it starts fine.

Is it cold where you are at? Might need to plug in the block heater.

yes it freezes once in a while but shouldnt need plugged in till colder

you should have a fuel check valve at the fuel filter.if it is leaking fuel past the check it will be hard to start.next time you want to start it,pump up the fuel with the hand pump before trying to start

Another possibility is that you may need to replace injectors. They may not be atomizing the fuel properly and may be popping off too soon at a lower pressure. The rough running indicates a fuel problem if it clears up.

Even if it "starts". The block heater should still be plugged in at 40F and lower.
What's better? Less wear on the starter, batteries ,alternator and engine with a warm start. Or grinding away 10-20 seconds on the starter?
How old is that engine and how many hours? It isn't going to start like new?
How old are the batteries, are they a matched set and what size are they?
Have you measured the voltage at the starter while cranking?
Is there a de-stroker on the hydraulic pump?

This is what JD territory service manager advised me back ehen 4430's were new "after shutting off engine advance to full throttle,then back to idle,this helps set rack inside pump to start position while pump is warm". Also if your pump still has manual aneroid one can manually
set the aneroid by tripping it forward.

I would check the aneroid control cable if it has one. sometimes these break over time and it will not kick the pump into overfuel at start up. Its on the back side of the injection pump and conects to some linkage and the speed control.

I would start off with pulling off fuel filter replacing with new one and making sure that the filter is completly full of fuel. After this, put throttle 1/2-3/4 open and start. This should take any air out of the system. Good Luck

he said the tractor turns over and over before it starts,shouldnt this rule out the starter and batteries being suspect? (unless its cranking real slow)
