john deere730 deisel Good Tractor???

Im looking into buying a 730 deisel electric start tractor. Has the single front three point one remote. Its in fair condition tires are suppose to be good What is one like this worth. Any issues with the tractor that i should be aware of or look for before i go buy? Any help will be appriciated. I am very familar with the JD 40 420 430 and M series.

I won't guess at a price, but a 730 Diesel with a 24 volt electrical system is way different than your Dubuque models. On any of the 70 series diesels, their almost singular issue is or was loose flywheels/damaged crankshaft splines/damaged end play thrust washers. If the tractor is right, right now, it's probably a good one. You can fix a broken one, but it gets expensive fast. Lots of folks say the solution is a taper lock flywheel, but I have always fixed them back to original. As original, they were good, tough machines.

We have a 70diesel pony start,720 diesel e.s, and 730 pony start. The 730 is by far my favorite of the three if u r buying it at a good price don"t hesitate they seem to keep climbing in value.. We mostly just use ours for light jobs around the farm such as raking hay pulling wagons or chopping stalks in the fall.. The best way I can personally describe a 730 is like operating a 4020 with a hand clutch. The 730 is a great tractor.

Take the flywheel cover off and have a look. Make sure the flywheel is thight and it isn't shimmed up with beer cans in the splines or worse yet, welded to the crank shaft. If it already has a taper lock flywheel that is fine. The taper lock flywheel is a great update. If it has the original style flywheel and it is tight that is good too. Just check the flywheel bolts ocasionally to ensure they are good and tight.

Unless you like noise, smoke, loose flywheels, and having an endless money pit, leave it alone. If you want a 730, buy a gas one as they can be fixed under a shade tree. A good console 4020 would be 10 times a better tractor.
