Jumpered Ignition switch

I had a problem keeping the engine running, (8N, front mount, 6-volt) and after reading on here alittle bit jumpered the ignition switch to check it. It started and ran fine and I figured I had located the problem. After running for about 20 minutes at medium load the jumper wire melted and smoked! I know I shouldn't use it with just a jumper but is the fact that the jumper wire got so hot an indication of a short somewhere else? Obviously I will replace the ignition switch (probably with a heavy duty toggle switch) but when i do should I look for any other indications of a short. (Such as melting parts or flames!!!!)

Unless your jumper was as small as a bread wrapper twistie tie wire, then the coil should not draw enough current to melt your jumper. Unless lights are on, coil should be only draw. When turn on ign, what does ammeter show (bump to get points closed to take reading)?

Yes flames would be a good indication of a problem...

your tractor is 6 volt so remember it is positive ground and you might use a cotinuity tester or multi meter to see if you have a short on each side of the switch.. Disconect both sides of the switch then check the leads coming to the switch and check the contacts on the switch itself.

Perhaps a BLEM has "re-engineered" the electrical system so the charging current from the generator passes through the ignition switch. Otherwise, I'd suspect a bare wire/short.
