jumping 6v

Can a 6v battery be jumped with a 12v to get the tractor started? Always wondered on that. I have a 12v emergency jumper box kit from Canadian Tire that we carry in our camper trailer. Wonder if I can use that if I have to on my 6v tractor in a pinch.

I jump mine by going directly to the starter and avoiding the battery. I push the starter button down (mine's the large button,no solenoid) then touch the jumper to the lug on the starter. Just remember,if you have positive ground 6v,ground your 12v positive. Just touch the jumper to the starter for an instant to start it.

If it's a Deere diesel with the starting engine, the ignition coils will become a puff of smoke.

Cool. Thanks RRLUND and B&D. Its a positive ground 6v cockshut. Sounds like this can be done then. Gound the positive, and put the negative on the lug on the starter. And she spins. Any damage potential?

Not a whole lot of potential, but don't leave the dang thing hooked up any longer than after it starts.

Battery to battery is a bad idea but you can hook right to the start and be ok. If you hook it to the 6 volt battery the 6 volt battery can/will blow up in your face and believe me you don't want to do that because it could well be the last thing you ever see.

It better to keep your charging system in good shape and keep a good battery in the tractors.Ive seen a battery explode at a distance.Tractors always seem to get stuck with worn out batteries.One fellow go run over while boosting his tractor here last year.Broken arm ,head pinned to the ground by a rear tire.A friend went to look for him when he didnt return home from the woods
