King Kutter ID Help

A friend of mine recently said I could have this King Kutter 40"? (possibly 4') brush hog as he has no use for it anymore. It's a little rusty but otherwise in great shape. It needs a PTO shaft and a swivel kit but otherwise solid. Gearbox is solid and the blades aren't even chipped. I can't find a tag on it anywhere but I'm thinking it's equivalent to their latest L-40-40-P model but it doesn't list a swivel on their drawing. L-48-40-P does though so I'm assuming it would be the same. According to both drawings for new models its a 22" PTO, but I want to be absolutely sure before I order because they aren't cheap, around $250. Anyone else able to decipher anything different from these assumptions based on the pictures? Feedback appreciated!

I would hook it to the tractor and measure. Chances are you will need to by a shaft longer than you want and trim the sliding sections to the correct length. You should also have a snap ring to go in the groove on the gearbox input shaft. The snap ring is to keep the shaft from coming off if the shear bolt is sheared.

My 6'KK doesn't have that groove on the gearbox input shaft, just the shear bolt hole. BTW the input shaft is hardened. Wish my swivel wheel looked that good.
This is the result of a broken blade. Pic is the LF corner of the old mowerl Before I could fully depress the clutch the violent vibrations shook all 4 gearbox bolts loose.

Agreed. You're better off getting a shaft that's too long and cutting it down than getting the "right" shaft and having it be too short.

Have you looked at Amazon or Vevor? You can get perfectly serviceable PTO shafts for way less than $250.

As an aside, if the PTO shaft is 6" too long, do you cut 6" off both halves, or 3" off each half?

I have always cut 1/2 off each section.
