Knee Replacement

Had a knee done a year ago. Takrs time to heal and get back to normal. Do your therapy and exercises and you will get along fine, Had a hip done on Dec. 7th, Done what I was suppose to do and am normal in being able to do everything. Good luck on recovery, It will come if you do your exercises.

black My father had one put in when he was 57 years old. he really did as the doctor said. Walked about a mile ever day for a year worked hard. Passed away when he was 87 and he could get up and down on combine and tractor just fine. His brother ( my uncle) had one put in spent 3 days in therapy and never did a lot of excecise and did not ever get it where it really was right. Moral of the story do your therapy. I think the implant is quite a bit better today than it was 30 years ago also. Good luck.

Had total knee replacement on 11/22/10. I'm back to normal, and have been pretty much so for a month! Don't be afraid to take your Vicodin/ Percoset! Being relatively pain free definitely helps with the therapy/recovery! Good luck and God speed!

Hang in there and do what the doctor says. Most important is doing the exersize and stretching they tell you to do.
My Dad had both knees replaced last year, had them done about 2 months apart from each other. He was wheelchair bound at that point and now can walk like he"s 30 years younger but runs out of breath pretty easy. He turned 88 a few days ago and is still living on his own and is quite independent. Yep, still drives too. He said the worst part of the rehab was he couldn"t drive!

had my left knee replaced 4-26-10.
the pain pills made me sick and zonked for the first week.
i told mrs 730 something has got to change the meds are making me sick and i wasn"t able to do my exercises. that proved to be a major set back.
in july i went back in operating room where doctor manipulated my knee to loosen up scar tissuse. he later told me i was already fighting alot of it from the first operation 30 years ago.
i couldn"t do the exercises he wanted me to do pre-op i told mrs 730 i can feel something cacthing in my knee and i can"t bend it.
after everything was said and done with the doctor said "how did you do the things you did?" "your knee was a big mess."
"i said i"m a farmer and did what i had to do." getting along good now.

I have had both knees replaced and could not be happier with the outcome. Many have had problems and I feel that it is very important where you have it done. I had mine done at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Mn and the doctors were very carefull about infection and blood clots. The two main things that can cause big problems. I was only about four weeks till I could walk without pain and no limitations. Had them done a little less than six months apart as that way you only need one physical. My Wife has had her R Hip replaced 2 tmes, both of her knees . LOts of therapy, was doing Great until 1 year ago in Jan. Had a Idiot run a red light , I t - boned him dead center on the passenger side , He had no Ins, & the car wasn t reg.properly. All he got was a ticket that said that he was at fault. Spent 6 weeks in the hospital surgery ,therapy .still has problems with her right leg she is able to get around with the aid of a walker . Even after her release from the hospital there was months of therapy . She needed a plate put in her leg DR . Said if it didn t work she would need another total knee replacement,Were jus glad that she is still around.Hang in there its going to get better.

I forgot to mention that the accident left her eith a broken R femur , broken left ankle & 3 broke ribs. J guess the laws don t apply to everyone.

Done on Monday? Today is Saturday. Results are not instantaneous. Had a hip replaced 2 years ago, excellent results, but was on walker, then crutches, then cane, for two months. More recent options, friends are walking within three weeks. Knee replacement is more severe, but hip or knee, doing exercises is key to good results. Did your doc tell you anything different, or do you want instant results? It won"t happen. Exercise is key- did mine for 6 months. No pain anymore.

Agree exactly re exercises...neighbor had a hip done, climbing the silo right after, didn"t exercise. Always complained about his new bad hip. Doing the exercises is always key to all I"ve known. One friend had both knees done at the same time, at about age 78!. Excellent results, and still kicking in his mid 80s.

I had a reconstruction without replacement since the docs felt I was 'too young' back in 2006 after an accident. In my late 30's then and I was 2 months getting from a walker to crutches and another 3 months getting off the crutches. Do what the docs and pt's tell you and it will be fine, but it wont be fast.

I didnt expect miricales in a few days but was hoping in 4 weeks to be able to do a few things like tractor pulling by end of March glad i have a hand clutch got the boys feeding so dont have to worry about that

Had left one done 4 yrs ago. Agree with Shetlandsheepdog below...TAKE the pain pills. They will allow you do do more bending and stretching which will quicken the recovery. " Manning up" will get you nowhere. An hr or two before PT take plenty and do some stretches of your own. Don't go into PT "cold". They will make you pay! If you don't stretch everything it will heal up "short" and you will never get total range. Age has a lot to do with it also. I was only 56 and very active physically. I had no problem with any of it and would do it again in a minute. Some older people are satisfied to just walk without pain and not interested in being able to do what a 50-60 yr old wants to do Got to remember , too , those PT people have a rep to keep and must report back to surgeon/doc on progress. They DONT want to look bad. Take the pain relief !!! More if you need it! Good luck. RB

I go in on wednesday to have my right knee replaced and straighten, I had it worked on 8 years a go and they put a fixator on it and it grew crooked, the reason for the fixator was to move the leg to the out side to get on to more cartledge. This is going to be a long time healing I think. The allen wrench that you see in the pic, was to losen the lock screw at the top and tighten it up on the bottom in turn pulling the leg to the out side. If you can see the they made a small cutt on the left side and drilled a few holes in a line and then broke my leg in order to make the fixator work right. I wore this for 6 months and had to learn how to walk all over again. The wrench was used 6 times a day for 34 days, and pain like you would not beleave
my wife had to tighten it up. hope I can show this ok;
So Larry@Stinescorner and Dave2 dont be stiring up any fires while I am gone OK OK, Im just joking
BE GOOD GUYS

Had left knee replaced 12-13-06 with Zimmer non-cemented unit. Was in the hospital for 4 full days after surgery because of pain. It never did work right at all. It hurt every day for 4 years. Had it redone 12-21-10 by another doctor (my back doctor). Was out of the hospital at noon 12-23! Very little pain. Did so well that the home health nurse and therapist released me EARLY to go to outside therapy. Was on walker for 30 days and am on cane now and should be completely off it this week. Used the cane full time before. Already have 110 degree flexion. The therapists and trainers are all impressed.
Dont get impatient! You cant rush things. Itll come about in its on goood time. By all means take your meds like they say to. And, doo all the exercises with out fail! I have been doing mine with more weight than at therapy;) Also use an ice pack for pain! Hope every thing goes well for you.
