Kohler 1650 Engine (K341)

I own a 30 year old Cub Cadet 1650 with the Kohler 16 HP engine. Recently I have been having problems with the engine turning slowly when attempting to start, as if I had a weak battery.
I replaced the battery, the starter and cleaned all connections but still having the same problem.
A friend told me about a "relief valve" that is supposed to relieve the compression when the engine is being turned over to start and if that "relief valve" didn"t work, I would have the same problem I am having now.
Does anyone have any experience with this and how to fix it?

The compression releif is attached to the camshaft. it holds the exhaust valve open for part of the compression stroke when cranking.
It works in conjunction with the exhaust lobe on the cam.
You do need the manual to tell you how to check for it and what to do if it is not working.

Might very well be your selonoid is worn out,it'll still engage but not not making full contact

A very common problem with these IH Cubs with your symptoms, is that the Ground Connection(s) become deteriorated from rust, vibration, and/or painted over time Make sure all connections are CLEAN & tight and down to bare metal.. It wouldn't hurt to upsize the ground cable either. In addition, you may want to consider running a ground cable from the Frame to the Starter Mounting Bolt as a added measure.

Thanks for the response. I did run a #8 cable between the negative side of the battery and one of the mounting bolts on the starter.
Problem fixed.
