I have a kohler 582 in my skid loader and the motor was rebuilt and I have about 15 hrs on it and I was using it the other day and I turned it off and about 5 minutes later i went to start it and it will not start it turns over but will not start. I checked for spark and it has spark it is getting gas. any ideas

Check valve tappet clearance,should be-intake .008-.010,exh .017-.020,also check that you don't have sticking/stuck valve(s)or carbon on valve face/seat allowing valve(s) to leak

Ign on 582 is 12v point/coil ign(twin cyl)if a 562 would have points/mag ign or solid state according to kohler manual, sheared key would then affect ign timing.

I took the valve covers off and the valves are moving and I also checked the points and filed them and still will not start

Valves may be moveing, but did you check tappet clearance,if not within specs valve(s) may not be opening,if clearances within specs, then put a shot of starting fluid/carb cleaner into throat of carb, crank eng & see if it fires/runs,if it doesn't then you have a problem with valves either not opening or a compression problem due to leaking valves, head gaskets excessive leakage past rings(blowby)or stuck rings, another possibility, depending on amount of wear on internal parts of eng & block, cam gear may have jumped it's timing or some other mech problem in eng.If eng fires/runs with starting fluid/carb cleaner then problem in fuel system(carb/fuel pump, fuel filter)also if eng has elect fuel shutoff sol, make sure same has power to it & is operating.

I did a compression check on it 120 on one cylinder and 130 on the other, the motor was rebuilt and has about 15 hrs on it. I gave it a shot of starting fluid and all I got was some poping

Best thing to do is goto kohler website & download a service/repair manual for eng or call whoever rebuilt eng & tell them about problem, eng should run longer than 15 hrs without a problem, fileing points may have changed gap & affected ign timing or you may have a bad coil or condenser along with possible mech problem

All the K532 and K582 engines I have worked on do not have a flywheel type ignition. Points operate off camshaft and will work even if flywheel is not on engine.

I've got a Bobcat 530 with the same engine. One time the fiber gear on the governor wore so that there was slop in the keyway and it threw off the timing. There's a 1/4" pipe plug in the gear case at the governor where you should be able to check the gear for play. At top center a beveled tooth should be able to be seen. At worst pull the governor and check the gear.

I got the engine fixed. the mechanic said the timing was off from when the engine was rebuilt and they never put in new points and they used carbon spark plug wires in the rebuild, the float was bad in the carb and a needle and seat needed to be replaced. engine starts and runs 100% better than what it did after the rebuild
