Kohler K321-S K321 AS Difference ?

What is the difference between the "S" and "AS" ?

Looks like the base/pan is different so far.

Reason I am asking is I just bought a pair of Ford LGT's 125 & 145, latter with a Kohler K321-AS, running condition and I want to use it as a drop in re-power for an old CH&E Sawrig ( a gas engine powered table saw ). The original motor is on the bench, apart, my father had left the darned Sawrig outside, though I pulled the motor years back and brought the engine inside, the bore looks good, can still see the cross hash, maybe just a hone, re-ring, and crankcase cleaning would do it, but the threads at the exhaust are rusted and I am not sure if a 1" NPT tap will save em, was also told you should replace the connecting rod and bolts once apart ( any truth to that ???) have to measure up and check things with tools I don't have, plus all the other misc. things... more money not in the budget, easier right now to re-power

The K321-AS has what I believe is the same horizontal shaft, so I believe I could replace the tractor pulley with the one on the S, but there is also a shaft connection at the finned flywheel/shroud (one that circulates the air), which the K321-S does not have + the pan/base. so I'm wondering if I have any issues, mount holes would seem to match, was thinking these K Series were alike, think I am wrong on that, but hope this will still work as a re-power for the K321-S, certainly got em cheap enough.

I also wonder if the base/pan from the K321-S will fit or can be installed on the K321-AS.

I once replaced a K-301AS with a K-301S. The first engine was a early 140 JD the second was from an 812 Gravely. The K-301AS was unrepairable so I was replacing with the K-301S. I tried to use The K-301AS crank BUT I found that the interface tapper between the flywheel and the crank differed between the K301AS crank and the K-301S flywheel. What I did was to turn the PTO end of the K-301S crank down to one inch from it's original 1 1/8 inch size.

You can still get the Kohler manuals from the Kohler website. Look for the link to "Classic Engines".

There were quite a few letters used, but S designates electric start. A is a special oil pan. Q is a quietline - used mostly by JD and IH.
