I have a Kohler M16, single cylinder, horizontal shaft on a Taylor Dunn cart. I threw a rod which I replaced. The engine was not running poorly before the break and oddly, no other damage occured. Incidently, it just seemed to lose power before the rod eventually gave.
The problem is that I can get it to start and run, but it does a few odd things. It will idle for a while (5 minutes) and then quit. I can increase the RPMs, but not if the drive is engaged. It isn't exactly backfiring, but sometimes when I start it it pops, more like a compression thing than a predetonation.
I fiddled with the carb and that makes some difference, but not much. It did sit a while and our fuels in CA are not long lasting, but the tank is clear. I did disassemble and clean the carb, nothing of note there. I'm farily certain it is a fuel issue. Nothing else was touched in replacing the rod except I did replace the rings.
Any ideas?
