Krone KR 260 Round Baler

Thinking about looking at one of these that the "main chain inside the bale chamber is broke" What would cause this break? How tough & expensive is this fix? Any other issues with these?

Hubby and I recently bought a K260, but haven't used it yet. We took it to a Krone dealer to have it looked over and made field ready, but they did a lousy job and he spent last w/e going over the baler. There are two main drive chains, one on each side of the baler that drive the bars that roll the hay. There are many reasons that could have caused the chain to break, most likely failure to keep it oiled or it jumped off the gear. We used about a quart of WD40 oiling the cains and it made a major difference in how the baler turned. The chain is repairable. They make repair links and most good farm supply stores should have a repair link and the tool to add/remove the link. You oould order a new one from a Krone dealer if you had to. Also, download the operator's manual from the Krone website. This is an absolute must! We did then put the pages in sheet protectors in a notebook. There is a lot of info on maintenance, adjustments, and operation that you will need in the manual. The manual is well written and easy to understand. You will need a few metric tools, specifically a 13 mm socket and open/box end wrench combo. We plan on baling next week and will let you know how it goes.

How it got broken is anybody's guess. We buy used farm equipment and some of the damage we see, we wonder how it the world it happened.

Hi I'm not familiar with the KR 260 but we have a KR 130S , seems a bit unusual for the main chain or elevator chain as i call it to break,
Our baler has only one elevator chain which runs through the top of the bale chamber and around the back door, nancy mentions their machine having two chains, some earlier krones had two seperate chains with drive to the chain in the door through a dog clutch ( door chain stopped when door was opened) the chain could have broken if the door was opened with baler running at full pto speed (540rpm) this puts a lot of strain on chain and tensioners i always slow pto a little when opening the door or chain may have jumped a tooth on tensioner sprocket at the bottom of the door I have seen this to happen, it will damage the chain and cross bars also check the bearings at the ends of the elevator cross bars these can break allowing chain to flap around also DO NOT attempt to start the baler at high pto rpm with a bale in the chamber this can shear elevator chain drive shaft and may break the chain

Always keep chain well oiled I find chain saw chain oil very good

I think I will take a look at it, I'm just worried a broken chain means something else is wrong. Problem tell em' to put a new chain on her & get it right if they want me to consider it, otherwise someone else can buy it.

Chains are chains.... they wear out.
If it's just an old baler don't count on them putting a chain in it for your consideration. If it's that far gone and old the Chinese will get more consideration than you will on that deal.
I'm not familiar with the baler but I'd suspect that it's something along the lines of a 550 ag chain. Probably a 1" pitch or mabey a bit larger. You'd be looking at a grand or more for chain....
Generally speaking, when a chain starts breaking, the jig is up. Get a new one. I'd bet you can form an "S" with it bending it from side plate to plate... BT/DT.

Supposed to be a 99 model with little use (advertised that way at least). IF it were an old worn out baler, I would understand...
