L-Hercules or JD engine?

I have the chance to buy a JD L next week, but have forgotten how to tell if it has a Hercules or John Deere engine. I know this has been discussed in the past but the older I get the shorter my memory. What is a sure fire way to tell which it is if the serial tag is missing?

the fastest way to tell is the oil filler on a herc motor is straight up and down inside the hood! The Jd motor is on a angle and comes outside the hood! Also JD motor {Most of the time will have elc start!}} Herc motor is a hand start! I have a very nice L for sale email me if interested! [email protected]

You can also look at the flywheel housing at the back of the motor. If it is two separate pieces it is a Herc. If it is a single cast piece it is the JD motor.
