Looking for 371 detroit Tall block , new style 4 valve head,
Blower on left side, while setting on seat. Mine runs but would like newer engine to build. Can buy new style 471 locally but have to cut steering, a arms, make a new hood , etc. and guy wants 4000.00 for rebuilt engine.
The question is , only 34 tractors converted with 371, should i leave the 371 or put the 471. Just thought i d see what you guys think? Danjwv

I apologize for not answering your question, but I have a question. You mention only 34 converted to 371, is that kits sold or what do you base that # on.
I have a 1941 LA pictured. I was told by the previous owner that he and a local blacksmith (Gwinner ND area) converted it in the 50's. He farmed with it for many years. I purchased it a couple years ago, it had sat since the mid 80's. He thought the engine was from an Allis Chalmers road grader. I replaced the injectors. It runs good, but has 34" rubber full of chloride. More tractor than engine.
Thank you!

If you are thinking of the hood and steering anyway, I have a 78 model 671 that would fit. I think.

A 3-71 does not have big power or much torque unless it is wide open. Personally I would go for the 4-71 or even a 6-71. Don

That is a nice neat looking repowered L A.
I owned & farmed with a 371 in another make of tractor, it was not as nice clean looking rig as yours. As for power we got along good with it & very easy on fuel. clint

I was visiting with a old gentleman about his 371 he put in a LA. With the 371 you need to extend the radiator shroud. He said with the 471 it would sit closer to the radiator and you wouldn't to mess with making a shroud. Think I may have pictures of a 471 in a LA. Also got a picture of a LA with a 671 in it. Will have to find them another evening. The pictures are of a 371 conversion in Billings MT.

I have another la case and was saving it for a 671detroit, how much were you asking for your 671 and where are you and yea one more question, is it already out of truck?
Thanks. Dan Johnston.

A question for you guys that farmed with L A s with the Detroit engines. Was low and second gear used for most tillage jobs? The Detroit was a high RPM eng. and the L A rear end was geared to the low RPM Case eng. That made a big difference in ground speeds.
With my 371 in a M-M GTB we used low or second most of the time for tillage. We ran our 371 at about 1900 to 2000 RPM. clint

I have A 6-71 & Was thinking of putting it in my 600 All so have thought of using a 8-71 or my be 12-71 a guy has near me ?

The 8-71 or 318 as it was known to truck drivers has a good sound to it, the 12-71 is just noise and can be heard for many miles down wind. Kinze started putting 318's in 5010 and 5020 tractors that were dead.

Before I worked for the Egging Co. The owner Ted Egging always tried to get my Dad to convert his LA to a 371. Dad always said when the Case engine wore out he would, but the LA engine never wore out. Dad always tried to sell Ted a Ercoupe as he was a Ercoupe dealer. Ted never bought one although later he owned a Piper
Cherokee. I worked along side with Ted at the Egging factory . We, (Ted and I) made the saftey shields for the Opel beet harvester we were making than. I worked as a Cat Certifed Welder for six of my ten years I worked there. The years 73-82 and 1989. and it is Gurley NE not Girlie. I live 25 mi. from the factory. They still are in business and make parts for Cat. They have a factory in Clinton Ia also.

i have a 351 for sale if you are interested -- came out of a commpresor-- blower could be on the other side but i dont see that would make any difference -- north west iowa
