lanova deisel

The term Lanova refers to the design of the combustion chamber. It was designed by a man named Lanova. I think his first name was Peter. One of the first and maybe they were the first engines to use it was Buda. The Lanova type combustion chamber was popular with the engines used by the American Farm tractor manufactures. All the major American manufactures used the Lanova design except John Deere and Ford. IH had one application and that was in the 350 diesel which was a Continental engine. Part of the combustion chamber is the "energy cell" as it is known. The energy cell is located in the cylinder head. Newer engines are direct injection where the combustion chamber is located in the top of the piston. Does that help?

It's in a way like indirect injection where fuel is injected into a smaller pre combustion chamber where it ignites, but quickly runs out of oxygen. The fuel then moves into a secondary chamber where more oxygen is present and it is there where it completes the burn. Basically a way of slowing combustion down. It makes for a nice quiet engine and the Oliver's were actually very fuel efficent.

That generally is the case. A lot of it comes down to all the surface area with an IDI. It makes it harder to light off when cold. But, I think the old Oliver Lanova engines still started decent. Granted, they were not a true IDI.

My Case 500D, AC WD-45D and Farmall 350D all have Lanova injection fuel systems. They all start pretty easy and are easy on fuel. PK
