Larry NCKS- Ford 4000 Question

Larry I just put another pto cable on my 1963 Ford 4000 with Select O Speed.When I start the tractor the pto runs a little with the pto pushed in,but when i pull the pto you can feel the pto to actually kick in and run.Also the pto will run when the clutch is fully depressed.Is this normal or what should i look for. This is my first Ford Tractor.Any help will be greatly appreciated.Thank You in Advance. John

That is absolutely normal! The inching pedal (clutch) has nothing at all to do with the operation of the PTO on your tractor. The PTO will stop turning when in the off position when there's enough of a load on it.

The PTO in your tractor is called independent live PTO. In other words, the T handle is the only control you need to use to active/deactivate the PTO. The inching pedal does not need to be depressed to ingage/disengage the PTO. Although its clutch pack is part of the transmission, it operates separately from the transmission. In other words, it doesn't care if you stop the motion of the tractor completely. The PTO still does what the T handle control is telling to do.

BTW, if you pull the T handle out slightly, the PTO will feather in and not snap in all at once. You'll get used to the spot once you've operated it several times.

cant find the right manual for my tractor 981-D with old select o speed have the it manual need one for the trans all i can find is manual for the new style trans. my pto is the exact opposite when i pull my handle the pto spins but i can easily stop it with my foot and speeding the engine causes it to stop slowly, i think that the clutch is out but could just be an oring my it manual doesnt go to enough detail that i would tear into it. everything else on the trans works flaulessly by the way. any help would be greatly appreciated.

My guess yours is not "opposite" , but operates, or doesn't operate as the case may be, the same with the cable pulled as with it pushed in. Easy answer is somebody did not properly adjust the cable when it was installed last time.
