Late model A

Hello,

I"ve found a late model J/D A my guess is
around a 49 or 1950. No serial tag left it"s rusted away.. Single shift lever with 3 point
with a spit pedistal.Been sitting for about 13 years, tighter than a bulls bung in fly time.. One thing I"ve noticed that appears different to
me it the clutch handle, it"s as long as a model
50 or 60 but with a small ball.. Hasn"t been
added too, I"ve been to show"s & looked at many
A"s & early 60"s & just never seen a straight
longer handle with a small ball. We haven"t
came terms just yet but this thing might be on it was to a new Home.....

I think the long clutch handle was used with the mounted corn picker. I have seen them, but it has been too many years.

U might be on to something?? Wonder if this
might have a optional reverse gear? I don't
know.. Evidence that something was mounted
on the sector shaft, such as a gear maybe...
I know it has a wierd bracket mounted on left
of battery box, that I am not familiar with.

It's a cluch handle to a 50 or 60. An oldtimer told me about changing them for easier operation. For some reason I think he said the one off a 50 would fit an A.

You likely have a corn picker clutch handle. The small ball tells that it is. The later clutch handles had larger ball grips on them. If your lever is not worn you may find a "J" part number on it (or possibly an "N") which will tell you that it is indeed a corn picker attachment rather than something that came with your tractor. Thank you for the reply's I'll look for a
stamping Letter if this thing comes to my
house. I've just never seen one froze up so
tight, can't even wiggle the fan shaft??
Have to cut down trees & remove the brakes
to get to roll.. Tractor is complete but
it's going to take alott of work... About
the only thing that still turns is the Key
switch.

My A was in about the same shape, it also has the long clutch handle and the handle is made completely different than the one on my 60. Mine is around 1948, it has the 2 stick shifter and the choke is on the dash instead of the steering support. Here is a pic of the clutch handle and a before and after pic;

if you need a block for it let me know i just took a good one out of my a to make room for a power block i want to get this thing out of here before it tries to rust up some one might as well use it

That is the handle Frogman.. I had a model B that
was a 48 with the same style hubs as your A.. I
forget what that heavier hub was for, but this A is a split pedistal with regular rolamatic hubs.
In the mean time I found a slant dash A thats
available for some $$, will make a good parts
donor for the late A such as rear wheels ^
grills. Not much on the engine parts will work
if needed. The very last thing I need is
another tractor, but I hate to see them rust
away. Kicking my rear now I cleaned out an old
school bus I used to store parts in last summer
with a bunch of cyclone A parts, gave them
away to a friend who restored a 1948 AW, still
on 42" I had wheels tires, block, hood & grills. Dummie Me........
