Lawnmower wont start

Hey guys...

So, im working on my neighbors mower, its a
craftsman thats kinda old, with a 15 horse briggs
one cylinder in it.

We thought it had a bad silinoid, and so i started
changing it out, having somehow forgotten to take
the battery out, and my wrench touched and there
was a spark show. Finish changing it out, and the
thing still wont start.

Any ideas?? Im pretty clueless here... Just trying
to help out..

Engine turns over but will not fire?
Starter does not spin at all?

If the starter does not spin at all look to the saftey switches first.

First thing check wiring harness for a blown fuse,if no blown fuse found,carefully jump across battery /starter motor terminals on sol,starter should crank eng if starter ok,after that check ign sw & all safety sw's on tractor

Do you have a set of jumper cables???? If you do go from the + post of the battery to the starter its self. MAKE 110% sure it is out of gear and the blade engage is turned off. If it turns over and with the key on starts then you may have a problem with one of the many safety switches one of the common one is the one in the blade engage lever BTDT on one I own of the same brand. Also can be the one on the clutch pedal which on most needs to be pushed down to start

As Joe Csuti said , check for a blown fuse . It is located under the hood next to steering column , under the seat, or under the shield between your legs, where the forward , reverse lever is located on some MTD machines , like a White mower , for example .

You should clean all those connections at the solenoid to make sure they're making good contact. I think when you twist the key to make a start your solenoid is grounded to provide battery voltage to the starter. You can easily jumper the solenoid. If the engine won't start you need to see if there's fire to your sparkplug
and if you have good fire to the plug remove the sparkplug and pour about a teaspoon of gas on top of the piston and reinstall plug and then see if the engine fires. If it does you have fuel blockage to the carburetor or in the carb. Hal

Safety switch under the seat, on the deck PTO, and the brake pedal. take the gas tank off and you can see the fuse and the solenoid clearly.

If the engine will try to crank BUT NOT turn over, the valve on this, I assume OHV engine, needs adjusting. No decompression release action. I set the intake valve at .003 inch and the exhaust at .005 inch.
