Came home tonite and saw the neighbors dog out in the pasture, not unusual since he's there quite often but then a little later my dogs started barking. Looked out the window and dog was attacking our goat. By the time i ran the 10 acres to get to him it was too late, goat was dead. Neighbors are the type that dont really care about other peoples property so talking wont do much good. My concern is we have 5 horses out there and if the dog was brave enough to kill the goat whats going to stop him from running a horse thru the fence?? Dont get me wrong, i love dogs but i have alot of money invested in those horses.

I had a similar situation where six dogs did go after my wife"s mare. I made the mistake of confronting the owner if one of the dogs I shot, It was just a big hassle now I am the bad guy in the hood. Soooo now I live by the three S rule (Shoot, Shovel, & Shut up).

Oregon has some funny laws if your dog chases or even gets on your farm you can take care of the problem without anyone getting after you or call the local police and have them picked up. they can be done away with if they hurt a cow horse or goat.
Now the other law says that every dog gets his first bite free. Hey you figure it out.

I was told by the animal control officer that if a dog harrasses your livestock, you have the right to have the dog destroyed. He told me if I didn't want to kill it he would. The dog doesn't have to kill or injure the livestock, just chase it. This is New York state law.

It's been my experience that horses aren't too afraid of a dog . Mine will draw a bead on the dog take a run at him. A pack of dogs maybe, but the horse has a better chance of killing the dog than the other way around. A dogs courage evaporates in a heart beat when he sees something the size of a horse coming after him.

Local sheep owner had trouble with 2 dogs last week. The sheriff told him he had the right to shoot.

He did shoot and the dogs had tags.

The sheriff took the dead dogs back to the owners.

Surprised the sheriff took the dogs back,but at least the dog owners know what happen to their dogs I guess.

montanagriz, Here in the Heart of Texas......S. S. S. With the influx of city folks, or folks who just don't understand the basic rule of law in matters like these. I have personally taken care of numerious problems just like yours.
Funny though when that person showed up at my house....."I just haven seen your dog, But if I do I will be sure to hollar at you"...........Right!
Problem gone, no out right confrontation with the new city neighbor, thats is the bottom line. Hope this helps!

Once a dog gets it in their head they can kill they will continue to do it. When I was a kid there was some dogs that started with sheep, then goats, then deer. All the farmers had their guns ready and they eventually got used. Next time he came over I'd make sure he was no more. SSS like the others said.

Don't know the laws in your state but in this state if that happen you have the right to shot the dog plus you can press charges to boot and take them to court and at least get your money for the price of the goat

Next time you see that domestic coyote on your place, let a hollow point do the running. If it killed your goat, it will be back and maybe with some buddies. Happy hunting.
