Leaking rear end

Typed this once, must have forgot to hit post message the second time. Rear end is leaking out the left rear wheel (not doing the brake a lot of good by the way). It appears that the guy I got it from stripped out the threads and did a home repair tap job (trying to post a picture). Question is, how much work to fix? Is the seal shown in the F04 manual (d5nn4115a) what seals it up? BTW, it is a 1949 before the rear end changes to help sealing, or will I need to change the rear axle to redo his home fix to get it to seal.

As always, thanks for you guys help to a novice.

I had the same problem w/ my 1950 sidemount. You're going to need brake shoes, a hub & an axle to start with. You might need a backing plate & a bearing retainer as well depending on how much got worn out from the loose tire. It's a pretty straight forward repair job when you just replace everything rather than trying to "farmerize" a cheap fix. Which is what you've got now. John Smith has the go-to instructions for the seal replacement; he also had an axle when I did mine!

Lots of folks around here have replaced seals/hubs/axles, so just tell us when you're ready to start & you will get plenty of help.

BTW.....pull it all down before you start ordering parts or you will get to pay freight twice! (BTDT!)

It probably started out with a worn out hub.

Not bad to fix.

From what I see in the pic, you will probably need seals, a hub, and an axle also.

We may can come up with someone that would have a good used axle.

You are going to have to get it apart and see what you have.

At least you can post pics.

Thanks, got her put up for the winter, might wait until March to do it. Give me time to tear it down and figure out what I need.

So, it is at least safe to say I will need an axle, right? That gives me time to look without having to hurry. Any year 8n axle work?

In case the rear end lube is OVERFULL, it may be that water is the cause... It's not a good idea to leave that in over winter... no matter WHAT part of the country you're in...

You don't need the rust and sludge that comes with that...
