Leinbach Post Hole Digger

Found a used PHD on craigslist I'm interested in. He doesn't say what model it is, but it's got a 12' inch auger and goes 3 ft. deep.

I don't know anything about Leinbach...do they make anything decent?

Feller wants $500 OBO for this PHD. Whatcha think?

The 12 inch auger would add to the price. Check on ebay for prices on leinbach diggers. Price sounds high to me. I recently bought a new Bush Hog digger with 9 inch auger for some where in the $800 range. I was advised by someone knowledgeable that the Leinbach digger did not have good points at the business end of the auger. Point is welded steel and 9 inch replacement points on ebay were $25. The Bush hog has a forged screw on the end and 4 replaceable chisels, and I don't think keeping it in chisels would be as expensive as keeping up the Leinbach points. My Bush Hog digs really good.

Got a cheapie from TSC that has done everything I wanted to do. A 9 inch auger will make quite a decent hole. Have only had to help out a few postholes by hand, due to oversized posts. Mine has replaceable cutters, screw point. Drill in the $100 class, post hole digger in the $300 class. How much of a commercial operation you doing? How much of a post hole digger do you really need?

Offer him $300, delivered. A 12" auger is a liability if you are planting 6" or smaller posts, too much fill & tamping. I use landscaping timbers for most of my posts and use a 6" auger.

We'll be planting some pretty good sized posts for corners, stretching stations and such. Upwards of 8 inchers I think.

Yes, all that's true, but I would hate to take the easy way out and end up with junk. Really want something that's going to be on the farm and being used in 20 years.

Hmmm, thanks for the ideas. I do know what you mean about the blades and points, and Bush Hog makes some great stuff...problem is we've only got $600 to play with. I'll keep shopping.

I've used landscape timbers for fence posts as well, with pretty good success. Did you know Lowes will sell you their blemished timbers ( chips in ends, etc) for half price?

Sounds high. I picked up a Deere 31 with heavy duty 12 inch double flited auger with forged point and carbide sereated cutters for $375 at auction a few years ago. The best part about it is it has a slip clutch in the drive shaft. Very nice when digging in roots and rock not having to replace shear bolts.
