Puts me in mind of a Jerry Clower story concerning Mr. John Eubanks. "Whatever you do always give it a sportin chance...John said take a cross cut saw with you coon huntin or otherwise climb the tree and force the coon to jump out. Give him a sportin chance. Sometimes we"d make a coon jump in amongst twenty dogs but at least he had the option of whoopin all them dogs and walkin off. This was left strictly up to the coon." God bless.

My old coon dog once chased a coon up a fence post. Now that is what I recall like in the Dukes of Hazard---in hot pursuit !lol,bob

His day would get a lot worse if I was the one who woke up and found him. I have cleaned up a lot of dead poultry over the years as a result of coon invasions and have a tendency to be a little rough on them.

I agree... any coons found at my house at night, won't be found at my place in the morning.. unless you have a shovel and dig them up... most of them die of extreme and sudden lead poisoning...

Time for lead poisoning. Over the last year, Dad has trapped over 75 coons in his farm yard. Live trap with colored marshmallows. One day he went out and caught three young ones at one time!

Interesting perspectives. I've never had coons bother anything on my farm. My chickens roam the yard freely and the garden has always been fine. Bird feeders are never touched. I've seen them before, but never had any problems. I just leave them alone and they do the same to me. I guess I must be lucky.

The dogs usually tree them and I have to pop them with a .22, but Linus and Lucy love a good fight so I left him alone. The coon finally came down, the dogs did not even flinch until he was about one foot from their noses, one less coon.

I'm with you let live and learn. I don't have a problem with the few coons around here.
I had beavers in my Dam that would plug up the over flow pipes in the winter but we made an agreement with them don't cut down my trees and i will let you have fun plugging up my pipes. Actually they helped me as in the spring I would let the plugs stay and gain about 1.5 ft. of water in the pond for the coming summer.
Now i don't see any activity from the beavers I think some idiot killed them off If I find out who he's in bad trouble with me and the State.

I like the way you think Walt. I really enjoy watching nature. I allow my brother to hunt one deer a year off my farm, but that is it. I'm not against hunting per say, but I just like all the different animals in nature.

Would have to pop em', they carry rabies here. Dogs usually get tore up a bit if they fight them.

The stupid things climb up our siding and get on the roof and crap all over everything, and fight in the middle of the night.

I would have to agree with the lead poisoning technique. All though I like having Nature all around, those racoons have caused me enough trouble. The last one I caught in the chicken coop with one of my chickens in his lap, he got up and left through the back entrance when he saw me and was heading up the fence when I hit him with the 2 x 4, he just stopped and turned around to look at me and then he hissed so I hit him again. Over the fence he went in a lump, after making sure he was a gonner I put him a foot underground. Don't like em in my chicken house, don't mind em in the nieghbors, he deals with them the same way. Trap em and shoot em.

One old boy I know was catching them with a live trap after they started causing lots of problems. I asked him what he did with them after he caught them he said I take them over to the stock tank and see how long they can swim-with the trap. Lee

Years ago My Daughter had some rabbits and chickens she showed at the Co. Fairs. Due to it being dark when I left for work I didn"t nothice that a coon had got in the pen and killed about 4 of Her chickens and ripped the skin half off another.
When I got home, I found out that they had taken the damaged chicken to the vet and had 60 STITCHES PUT IN! I flipped! "Why didn"t you just cook it"I demanded.
Never did get that EXPENSIVE coon, but I sure watched for him alot for the next few weeks.

A co-worker said that his Grandfather's dog would chase chipmunks. If the chipmunk went up a tree, the dog would sit still at the base of the tree. When the chipmunk came down the dog would get it. Sometimes the dog sat motionless for up to 30 minutes.

My Mom had that same attitude, except they got to swim in the pond because we didn't want to dirty the stock tank.
