I am in the process of doing a fairly heavy "beautification" of my 51 8N, though I'm not trying to make it into a show tractor. I'm pulling off everything that will come off so I can clean, sand and paint (hood, fenders, rims, running boards, etc.) I can take stuff apart and sometimes even put it back together, but I'm by no means a mechanic.
In attempting to remove the right-side lower lift arm/bar, I discovered that the lug it attaches to on the differential/pump housing is loose, and it turns freely inside the housing. I talked to a knowledgeable person who said that this "pivot lug", for lack of a better term, extends into the cavity of the housing (explains all that hydraulic oil on the housing and axle). He said it is held on the inside by a nut (castle nut, I assume)and a cotter pin. He said that in order to get to it I'm going to have to pull the axle housing away from the differential/pump housing.
I have no idea how to go about doing this. Should I attempt it myself? Any special tricks I should know about pulling the axle shaft and getting it back in? Help!
