Question John in La. Bruce in Va. anyone?

I have a 53 Jub 6 volt that ate the ignition switch. This is do to I believe being wired wrong. As sounguy stated overloaded ignition switch with 15 amps or so. Lights would only work when ignition switch was on. Checked this site on wiring diagrams, seems to be right? One side to terminal block the other to the opposite side. My question, is the light switch supposed to be hot all the time? If so the light switch may on the wrong side of the terminal block? If that is where it is supposed to go? Hope this is enough info. I may be way out to lunch on this?? Tractor was wired this way when I purchased it. Its taken about 8 months to burn out the switch. Any help appreciated.

Doc in WV,
Light switch should be hot all the time. You could come off the other side of the terminal block. That side is where the juice is coming in from the battery or the amp-meter. You want a fuse in the light cicruit, either before the switch or I have a light switch that has a fuse built into the switch. (TSC I believe.)
Which part of WV are you in? I lived in Weirton for many years. My son is a State police Officer in South Charleston. Youngest is going to school at Glenville.

My NAA has the light switch wired from the hot side of the terminal block through a 20 amp in-line fuse. The light switch itself has a 20 amp fuse but is a two position switch which feeds a work light as well as the head lights and tail light and a panel light. To answer your question, yes it is hot all the time. Hope this helps.

Thanks previous owner has a one position switch and is only hot when key is on. As some of the guys on this site have stated it should not be wired through the switch. Will correct..

Here is a diagram of your tractors wiring. It does not have lights on it but you can use it to make sure all th other wires on your tractor are correct.

To add lights. Hook one end of a inline fuse holder to the HOT side of the terminal block. This is the same side that the ampmeter and B voltage regulator hook to. The other end of the fuse holder goes to the light switch. From the light switch run a wire to all the lights. The other side of the light bulb gets hooked to ground.

The simple answer is YES the light switch should have power all the time.

Doc in WV,
If there is a fuse there you are good to go. The extra fuse will be another point to go bad. Keep it simple. Inline fuse holders get hot easy and cause problems. BTDT
Son Kevin is a young officer (28). Likes to work with police dogs. Cross lanes area.

Thanks for diagram will trace wiring. All is not as it should be. Thanks for the help on loss of spark question awhile back, that was self induced....dumb move!

I am wiring my NAA and am scratching my head a little. When I look at this wiring diagram it indicates to me that the starter can engage without the key on with a push of the starter button. I feel like I"m losing it because I feel like the ignition switch must be on in my other Ford tractors.

Hi Rick, you are correct the starter can engage w/o key on. I like that feature on mine. others may not like it. AL

Rick,
Good Eye!
I believe that change happened with the XX1 series. I know my 4000 (1964) has to have the key on. Has to do with the Selonoid.

You can modify that by using the newer style.

You are right about having one fuse Keith,..but my work light has a three way toggle switch with two bulbs (white and red),..thus my extra in-line fuse.Anormal one position light switch requires only one fuse at the switch.

Rick:
Yes it will crank with the key off but will not start because the coil does not have power.
The change to must have key on to crank started with the X01 tractors.
The differance in these tractors and yours is the starter relay.
If you would like to make your NAA to where it will not crank with out the key on start a new post and I will walk you threw it.
You will need a new starter relay and some 12ga wire.

Thanks John, I did check my 841 and it does need to have the key on. My 8N is my next build and is all apart so I couldn't remember if it would turn over without the key on. Now I feel like i have to check my 871 and 641 diesels. I'll keep the NAA. I like the idea of turning over the engine without the key for things like timing. Thanks again.
