Hello out there, I know my allis chalmers D-14 does'nt have it, but what is meant when a tractor has live power? Can someone explain that, I have ideas but not sure. Thanks Jim, Mi.

'Live power' as in live power take off? Power to shaft is independant of transmission, runs directly off engine. Seperate engagement clutch. AC WDd45 up a ways-and d14s, etc- had a modified transmission drive power takeoff with a drive hand clutch lever to disconnect wheel power-stop tractor movement- while letting power take off shaft spin equipment, handy on corn pickers, mowers, balers and the AC all-crop combines. RN

Mr. RN: My Case 430 has a separate lever to engage the power take off and stays on unless I disengage the lever. I believe that is what you are saying. You just push in the clutch and the tractor stops but the pto continues to run. But if I push in the clutch on the D14 the PTO stops. There is a hand lever for high and low speed by the brakes. I believe in between the high and low is the neutrel your talking about and the pot will still run. It's been a long time since I ussed the pto on the D14.
Thank you,Thank you
Jim

That was Allis Chalmers answer fro live pto at the time. Ford used a half way depression of the clutch pedal to stop forward motion and all the way down stopped pto. Sounds like Case used the same.

D14 has live pto and hydraulics, not independent. If you can stop wheel motion without stopping pto or hydraulics, it is live....doesn't matter how you get there. Independent means you have pto and hydraulics whenever the engine is running. irregardless of what wheel clutches are doing. WD, D series pto are not driven by the transmission- power comes off ahead of it.

The two-clutch system as used in the Allis WD and D-series as well as Massey's two-stage clutch is commonly referred to as "live" pto. The kind where the PTO has its own clutch, such as Oliver and IH is more accurately referred to as 'independent' PTO.

for my money, not saying i dislike orange, but in the era of the D series, ih had the best system i think. the hyraulics were live and when equiped with the touque amplifier the pto was live also. so when you pushed in the clutch, the PTO and hydraulics kept running

Not the same on a Case, from the early 50s (last SC-DC) on Case had an independent PTO/hydraulic,if the engine was running they were available regardless of clutch position.

You ever see the picture at ,I think, Chicago of all the TA components waiting for either scrap or rebuild back in those days. Our local Allis dealer made sure it was posted by the front parts desk for many years. Doesn't seem like a better system to me.
