long bar on small chainsaw

i sure wish someone knew of a small good saw that i could buy that had a 20-24" bar on it. i am cutting acres of small brush and it would be so much easier not having to bend over with a big saw cutting at ground level. stil says a long bar will not fit on their small saws. a previous post by chevytahoe said his dad had one for this purpose but could not remember the brand. anyone know the answer?

Why not get a brushcutter with a sawblade??? I have a 130 but a 250 doesn't cost that much more and would be right up town. The 130 would hold up also (stihl).

A plasma torch copuld be used to cut out the engine end of both the long bar and original. Using a tool path on the outside of one trace, and the inside of the other. Re welding and drilling the oil passage would then make a long bar! Jim

I had one of those on an Echo weed eater. Cut briars and small sprouts pretty good. VERY dangerous tool. Father of my wife's friend has (had) a Christmas tree farm near Fort Knox and cut his foot pretty much off. He made it to a house before he passed out. Lost his foot though.

Why not buy a gas powered pole saw? (for cutting tree limbs high up) I have a cheap Poulan one that is great for cutting Honeysuckle and Multiflora without having to bend over. It"s about 7 or 8", so I can reach the trunks of the brush easily. If I need to trim down the stump I come back throught with a small saw to get it down to ground level after the brush is hauled off.

I agree with the others about a steel blade on the weed-eater type cutter. They will cut a lot.

You could also double-check on your saw. I have a Stihl and put a long bar on it, much longer than recommended, but it fits.

i run a 20" bar on a Stihl ms170...pulls it ok but i wouldnt want to cut big stuff all day long.

Any stihl larger than a 260 takes the same bar until you get to the 880. Therefor you could take a 260 or 270 and put a 24" bar on it easily.

Maybe they don't have them down there but we use thinning saws for that up here. They are like a brush cutter but heavy duty with handle bar style grip and harness. You couldn't cut your foot due to the long shaft but they do cut people around them when they kick back.

Usually cheap if they've been used a season.

If it really is acres get one. I did about half an acre with a chainsaw once and it took forever.

ihmike2003,
I think a longer bar would be more dangerous, you would be a little closer if the chain comes off.
I was lucky I was cutting the headge when it came off, after it heated up and a branch flipped the chain off the bar, the other branches caught the chain and saved me a lot of hurt.

The saw blade is safer and easier on the back, but you MUST be carefull, and there is no one within 30ft of you. Do not cut 5" pine (it will do it) or you'll break the gear housing.
Do not use a dull blade.

If you will be driving a tractor or car over the cut area try to cut flat not sharp on the up swing too hard on tires.

A Bush Hog does a great job not a lot of sharp sticks left behind.
