LONG Tractors

As of 2/4/08 LONG has ceased to do business. This was confirmed by 2 dealers in 2 different states. They simply locked the doors and went away. Nice foreign owned company!

Local Long dealer says other companies are interested in taking over Farmtrac. Last year they sold 12000 Farmtracs, the Indian Ford copies. The Korean Farmtracs added to the total, don't know how much. Abouy 40 employees are working for no pay at the Tarboro, NC facility and parts are still availiable.

Long (in blue paint if that matters) was around here for the past 30 years but never hit it big. I maybe saw 3 in that time whereas I have seen hundreds of everything else. Course dealership may be part of it. I tend to see what is available at a local dealer and Long hadn't been one of them. Like you used to see a lot of IH. Dealer closed 10 years ago and you seldom see one now. Course part of that could have been the flap about IH not supplying what farmers wanted and needed in the latter days so market share went to those who did.

They did come up in conversations from time to time and the general consensus of opinion was that they were at the bottom of the quality and whistle-bell ladder....explained why their cost was low....course it could have been where they were manufactured which I have no idea.

Are you happy with the performance of the Long tractors? Is yours the one built from the Ford tooling?

I had read a year ago that Montana Tractors, owned by JB Hunt, was pursing purchase of Long. I am not up to date on if Montana is still going or not.

Here is a link http://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/stories/2006/02/27/story4.html

Let's hope they get bought by a domestic investor. Good Luck.

If you are asking me, no, mine is the Romanian copy of a Fiat design. Has give generally good service since being bought new in 1980 and used seriously.
