Looking at a Ford 4610

Are there any particular questions that I should ask?

Are there any common problems that I should look for?

Unit is MFWD with a cab. Any particular issues there?

Just wondering if this model has any kind of reputation, good or bad, among the Ford community.

Thanks

as others have said.. inspect closely for abuse.. clutch wear, tranny problems, bubbles in coolant, bad power steering, no fwd due to broken parts.. no fluid in front hubs due to bad seals and maintenance, worn out to to being a material yard tractor, survivor of a flood and full of water. check pedal pivot shaft seals for leaks and wear. The dealers will change all the fluids and then send them to auction,, so buyer be ware as the fluids will look good for about an hour of running and then turn white.

In my market area, all the mfwd that come through the auctions are there because they are broken with serious problems.. If your doing private sales, you will probably do much better.

Was Ford's "Dual Power" option available in this model?

If it is, is that generally reliable? I know that "Torque Amplifiers"; which is the International/Farmall equivalent of Dual Power can be dicey in used tractors.

A 4610 is a very well regarded model, and I like them a lot. That said, the integral power steering box with a single drag link struggles to hang
together steering a MFD axle that supports a loader. Check the steering carefully.

FWIW, even though it would not have been available on this tractor, the Dual Power is generally considered to be light years ahead of the TA in how it works, and very durable.

That is good to know. TA's on used tractors make me a little uneasy. My brother has had Farmall's for my whole life, and he's become expert at rebuilding them, out of necessity.

Then, there's the whole issue of the older TA's (M and 460 vintage) that were free-wheeling in low range. I learned that the hard way; when I was a kid.

I"ve had one since 1999 and it"s a pretty bullet proof machine. It"s easy to maintain and easy on fuel. As with any tractor, it depends on how well it was maintained and whether it was used or abused.

I agree with RickB, they could have done a better job with the steering system but mine has been a real workhorse.
